The Whitesboro Fire Department was founded in 1915 and serves the growing rural community of Whitesboro. The department started with just a handful of volunteers and little to no equipment. For several years the fire and rescue departments were separate departments with different volunteers. Now the department consists of a roster of over 40 volunteer members with training and up-to-date equipment ready to provide service to people with various needs from fire protection, rescue response, and first responder medical response 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The department runs over 1300 fire calls annually.
The City of Whitesboro hired the first paid fire chief in April 2019. The department serves a fire district of 54.4 sq miles in the western part of Grayson County, Texas. In September 2022, Emergency Medical Service was added to the services carried by the fire department, resulting in the hiring of 12 full-time personnel and numerous part-time medical providers. The EMS Division covers over 200 square miles and parts or all of 7 fire districts and 4 cities, encompassing almost the entire western half of Grayson County.
The advent of WFD EMS also saw the purchase of 2 brand new, state of the art ambulances and medical equipment with the latest technologies and capabilities. The EMS Division is expected to run over 2000 calls a year.
The department has educational programs set up for new members and existing members to maintain a high level of readiness. Educational programs have also been set up for children, adults, parents, and the elderly. These programs emphasize the safety of others with classes in fire prevention, EDITH Plans, calling 911, and many others.
The Whitesboro Fire Department is a not-for-profit organization supported in part by the City of Whitesboro.
